Once installed, install the two bugfix files renaming each to 'Tale of Two Wastelands - Main Files' and selecting [Merge] when prompted. Note that after creating the FOMOD and installing Tale of Two Wastelands Fallout 3 can be uninstalled if desired. The two files are a D3D9.dll file and a Fallout.ini file. The instructions provide information as to where to put the files. If this fix doesn't work for you, and you system is otherwise up-to-date (latest video drivers, Games for Windows Live installed), then your issue lies elsewhere.

I know this is an old and hotly debated topic, especially with this old game.
I decided to pick up FO3-GOTY and FO:NV-Ult. ed. during the fallout anniversary sale on Steam,
being as I never played these games before.
At first i had no problems, but now, especially outside the vault, the game freezes up every 3 to 5 minutes in.
Ive looked through several steam community threads and other Tom's threads, and have tried most of these fixes to no avail.
Specs:
Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit
intel i7-3960K hexa-core 12 thread
16GB DDR3-1333 RAM (4x4)
Zotac AMP! Edition (Nvidia)GTX 980 4GB
Malwarebytes premium protection
(all current updates and drivers)
Fixes tried:
-ini file numkber change:
'line that says bUseThreadedAI=0. Change that to say bUseThreadedAI=1
Then hit SPACE key and type in iNumHWThreads=2 right below the other line. (if you still get chrashes change the 2 to a 1)'
-compatibility mode for Win XP SP3 and Vista SP1
-codec apps/tweak tools
-CPUcores
-set affinity- not possible on my PC, access denied on FO3
-disabled aliasing
-disabled all autosaves
-windowed mode
-verified game files
the best I get is a prolonged freezing, about 7 mintues of gameplay.
Ive seen people do it with the standard version, atleast with the CD-ROM.
Has anybody cracked the code here, or should I just refund this ASAP and get FO4 while it's still on sale?
UPDATE:
A friend told me to try this mod- https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/6510/?tab=1&navtag=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Ffallout3%2Fajax%2Fmoddescription%2F%3Fid%3D6510%26preview%3D&pUp=1
This mod was supposed to make FO3 capable of working on more tahn 2GB of RAM..however this did not solve my issue

Hi,
Welcome to Microsoft Community. Your interest in Windows 10 is much appreciated.
I would suggest you to try installing the game in compatibility mode. Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows.
Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps.
a. Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.
b. Right-click on the driver setup file and click on ‘properties’.
c. Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 8 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.
Keep us posted if you face any issues on windows in future. We will be glad to help you.

I've tried compatibility mode before, and it didn't work. this time, unfortunately, was no exception. I've tried all compatibility packs and this error persists: 'the procedure entry point SfmDxGetSwapChainStats could not be located in the dynamic link library C:Program Files (x86)SteamSteamAppscommonFallout 3d3d9.dll.'
any ideas?
EDIT: I've deleted the DLL file and it seems to work now. YAY! windows ten appears to me to be far worth the upgrade, even for gamers, and workarounds CAN be found!
for future people with issues:
i am running windows 10, 8/9/15
compatibility mode: vista pack 2 (may not be important)
DLL file (D3D9) deleted from the fallout 3 folder
I AM running modded, but may not a problem
I AM running steam edition NOT GOTY.
good luck.

Fallout 3 needs the above update. There should have been a notification popped up pointing you to that. Let me know if its still not running after updating the GFWL client.

Hi there,
I've been battling with this for a day or so and then today, prompted by the reply from Annu Singh above, I set the fallout3.exe file to 'Run as Administrator', now everything works fine.
Hope that helps
Nick

I have tried to run Fallout 3 as admin. I have set the compatibility to win7 and win8 to no avail.
I have the Games for windows thing downloaded, haven't done anything other than download it and open the client.
I am at a loss.

I've have the same problem as described here. Fallout 3 starts, then immediately crashes. I've tried fixes from here and from Bethesda's site. I'm about to give up the ghost on this one. Thankfully I found a mod for New Vegas called Tale of Two Wastelands. It is a tad bit unstable, but New Vegas mods work on it, and the modding community continues to work on making Fallout 3 mods compatible with it.
